Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of southern Africa, Chlorophytum comosum 'Ocean' is one of the most robust and adaptable houseplants. Its long dark green ribbon-like leaves edged with cream form a naturally dynamic arching shape, perfect for adding greenery to a shelf, low furniture, or windowsill. Check out our easy-care plants for more ideas in the same spirit.
When mature, it produces stolons bearing small rosettes — the famous "spiders" — which are easy to take for free propagation. Non-toxic to pets and children, it is ideal for homes with cats or dogs and is part of our selection of non-toxic indoor plants.
Which Chlorophytum variety to choose?
Three varieties of Chlorophytum comosum are available in our catalog. Here’s how to distinguish them to make the right choice for your interior:
- Chlorophytum 'Ocean' (this plant) — long ribbon-like leaves, dark green with cream edges, very airy arching habit (H25 cm | Pot Ø15 cm). The most graphic and trailing version.
- Chlorophytum comosum Variegatum — long leaves with green center and wide cream margins, generous arching habit. The classic and most contrasting version, with reversed variegation compared to the Ocean.
- Chlorophytum comosum Bonnie — curly and wavy leaves, green and cream variegation, bushy and compact habit (H35 cm | Pot Ø17 cm). The most original version, ideal for a sculptural effect in a hanging pot.
Light & Location
Chlorophytum 'Ocean' is remarkably adaptable in terms of light. It thrives in indirect light but also tolerates partial shade and brighter spaces — provided direct sunlight is avoided as it can burn the leaves and dull the variegation. Finding the right balance between light and humidity is key to maintaining dense and contrasting foliage.
- Exposure: indirect light or partial shade — avoid direct sun.
- Ideal: bright living room, bedroom, kitchen, well-lit bathroom, office.
- Temperature: 18 to 26 °C, no cold drafts.
- Substrate: well-draining, light, and slightly moist universal potting soil.
Watering & Care
A highly tolerant plant, Chlorophytum withstands both missed waterings and occasional overwatering. Its fast growth makes it one of the easiest species to care for in the catalog — the only rule to remember is to let the substrate dry slightly on the surface before watering.
- Watering: moderate — water when the substrate starts to dry on the surface.
- Drainage: essential — no standing water in the saucer.
- Humidity: adapts to average humidity; occasional misting in summer is appreciated.
- Fertilizer: every 3 to 4 weeks in spring-summer, liquid fertilizer for green plants at half dose.
- Care: remove dry leaves to encourage new growth and rotate the pot regularly for a balanced shape.
Decor Ideas & Plant Combinations
- Ideal location: elevated on a shelf or piece of furniture — its arching leaves and trailing stolons create a naturally airy and graphic effect, perfect for creating a tropical atmosphere effortlessly.
- Pair with: a Golden Pothos for bold green/cream contrast, a Chlorophytum Bonnie to play with two different arching habits — straight versus curly — or a Philodendron with broad leaves to anchor the arrangement.
- Ideal pot: light ceramic, beige, or textured stoneware to highlight the green and cream variegation.
Verdeia Tips
- Place it high to reveal its full potential: placed on a shelf or furniture, its arching leaves and trailing stolons create a very decorative airy graphic effect.
- Repot every 1 to 2 years: its fast growth quickly depletes the substrate — regular repotting into a slightly larger pot maintains its vigor and beautiful shape.
- Take plantlets to propagate for free: the small rosettes borne on stolons root easily in a glass of water or directly in substrate — propagating your plants without spending a euro is one of the great joys of indoor gardening.
